Pastor Steven Turikunkiko has set up a community in Rwanda for victims of the genocide. 160 widows & teenagers & 80 younger children live with him; farming, sharing their lives and caring for those dying from AIDS. The community subsists on less than $1 per person per day. At enormous personal sacrifice, Pastor Steven and his wife have also adopted 20 orphans - who live with them and their 2 other children. Leukemia rates rise in Basra A study in
Basra has shown that childhood rates of leukemia have doubled in the last 15
years. 698 cases were documented during that period, with a peak of 211 in 2006. The causes are not known for sure. However, Basra has suffered from major military action in three wars during that period – and there are many oil fields in the area too. It is suspected that the byproducts of petroleum fires, war-related nerve agents, pesticides and depleted uranium munitions may have had a savage effect on the health of young people in the area. |
