Christians jailed for human trafficking
In Egypt, Muslims are not allowed to adopt children. However, Christians are allowed to - although the process can be torturously slow and administratively burdensome. As a result, many couples will resort to forging documents and paying bribes. The four parents found guilty of trafficking are Egyptian-born Christians who hold US residency. They must also pay a fine of $18,000 each. Seven Egyptians have also been sentenced with regard to this case for proving forged documentation. They have all been sentenced to prison and must pay heavy fines. |

Two couples will both be spending the next two years in an Egyptian prison for allegedly attempting to traffic children. Both couples have claimed that they were attempting to adopt the children, not abduct them.
