Pastor Steven Turikunkiko has set up a community in Rwanda for victims of the genocide. 160 widows & teenagers & 80 younger children live with him; farming, sharing their lives and caring for those dying from AIDS. The community subsists on less than $1 per person per day. At enormous personal sacrifice, Pastor Steven and his wife have also adopted 20 orphans - who live with them and their 2 other children. In 'Adults on Trial', teenagers will be 'lent' a baby for 4 days and will be judged on how well they do as parents. They will have to carry out all parental duties - feeding, nappy-changing, comforting a crying child during the night and so on. However, there has been shocked outrage voiced by many parents, government ministers and the Federation for the Protection of Children. Using children like guinea pigs is unacceptable, according to critics. However, the television company have said that the children will be constantly monitored by psychologists and that the real parents will be in a near-by house and can watch their child, live, on monitor throughout the day and night. The first episode will be shown on 3 June. |
