Pope accused over condom comments
20% of Africans are Roman Catholics - a region of the world where, it is estimated, 22 million people have contracted HIV. Ahead of a visit to the region, Pope Benedict has said that condoms are not the answer to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In fact, he argued, the use of condoms could actually be making the epidemic worse. The only way to combat the disease, the Pope has said, is through the practice of abstinence and self-denial. Writers in the Lancet have said, "The Pope has publicly distorted scientific evidence to promote Catholic doctrine on the issue." They have called on the Pope to retract his statement immediately.

Leading scientists have accused the Pope of being irresponsible in his approach to condoms and the spread of HIV/AIDS. In The Lancet, professionals have said that he is misrepresenting the scientific facts - and that this could have terrible consequences.
