Pastor Steven Turikunkiko has set up a community in Rwanda for victims of the genocide. 160 widows & teenagers & 80 younger children live with him; farming, sharing their lives and caring for those dying from AIDS. The community subsists on less than $1 per person per day.

At enormous personal sacrifice, Pastor Steven and his wife have also adopted 20 orphans - who live with them and their 2 other children.

Sarah Malik has become the first paid Methodist Youth President. She will be be in post from January to September 2009 as advocate and spokesperson for young people. Hers is just one of 32 salaried posts that will be targetting 16-23 year olds.

Sarah, 20 years old, currently works in a Care Home in Eyam, Derbyshire.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 198.75 points, or 1.59 percent, at 12,302.55. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 27.05 points, or 2.03 percent, at 1,304.89, and had its worst daily percentage decline since June 1. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 75.17 points, or 2.65 percent, at 2,764.79.

The Guatemala-Mexico border runs between northwestern Guatemala and southeastern Mexico, across which commerce between the two countries as well as the rest of Central America takes place.

Calderon said his country's bilateral relationship with Guatemala is essential for security in Mexico.

He promised that his government would protect the human rights of immigrants from the rest of Central America who pass through Mexico to the United States.

Chinese companies listing overseas are expected to seek to improve their image to shake off the credibility crisis they face in the United States stock market, say analysts.

Three Chinese companies, Longtop Financial Technologies Ltd, ShengdaTech, and China MediaExpress, have been delisted from the Nasdaq in the United States for accounting irregularities.

Credit-ratings firm Moody's Investors Service also warned of "red flags" at 61 rated Chinese companies, further affecting the price of Chinese equities.

Some US-listed Chinese companies expressed confidence with their company's future stock performance and believed that the recent panic by share owners is only temporary.

Zhang said: "The US equity capital markets maintain high listing standards for all companies that list on their exchanges through the IPO process, and Chinese companies are no exception. Even beyond listing requirements, we've always believed that it's important for companies to be transparent and to demonstrate high standards of corproate governance. The US capital market system is relatively rational and ultimately rewards companies that demonstrate solid performance in the long run."

Zhang believed that in some ways the rash of recent scandals has helped weed out many fraudulent Chinese companies and will ultimately benefit those in high growth industries and maintain proprietary technological advantages over competitors.

"Unlike some of the exposed companies that used backdoor listings, AutoNavi underwent strict and legitimate due diligence by top-tier investment banks, lawyers and auditors prior to its initial public offering," she said, adding that she stood by the quality of AutoNavi's internal control processes and its employees' ethical standards.

Similarly, Xu said that although Qihoo cannot control external factors that influence the company's stock price, such as some investors' impressions of Chinese companies in general or China's alleged lack of protection for intellectual property, "we do our best to implement marketing strategies and reach our company's goals".

"To us, the effect of ratings from Moody's is rather insignificant," Xu told China Daily.

Xu said that unlike some other HK/US- listed Chinese companies, Internet companies such as Qihoo and Sina do not finance through the bond market and are not subject to recent warnings by Moody's of "red flags".

Xu acknowledged that Moody's ratings reflect the general suspicion of Chinese companies. "A Moody's red flag is yet another reminder of Chinese companies' lack of corporate governance," Xu said.

AutoNavi and Qihoo both chose to list on the US stock market because they saw a better investment environment. "By listing in the US, we can offer our employees an ownership stake through company stock, allowing them to benefit from being a shareholder through stock option programs. This is a benefit that is much easier to implement as a US-listed company as compared to a company listed in China," Zhang said.

While listing in China would receive mostly domestic attention, listing in the US serves as an international branding event for a company. The day Qihoo listed on the New York Stock Exchange attracted much international attention and Qihoo's stock price rose 135 percent.

A survey designed by China Economic Review magazine and Ipsos Marketing indicated that ordinary US investors in Chinese stocks made a net profit trading Chinese shares over the 12 months ending on May 1 this year. The survey further showed that retail investors are also more bullish on China shares than they were last year.

The mechanism protects newly listed companies from stock rushes. "Hedge funds are more sophisticated and they understand the potential of listed companies. Retail investors, regardless of their nationality, do not have a hedge fund's capacities to build reliable financial models and estimate a company's market potential or future stock performance," according to the securities analyst who declined to be named.

The survey also indicated that the most active investment sectors are electronics and technology, telecommunications and the Internet. This trend will most likely continue as both AutoNavi's navigation application and Qihoo's mobile phone security software become increasingly popular among smart phone users, observers said.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao yesterday ordered a swift and transparent investigation into the bullet train crash that killed 39 people and left nearly 200 injured.

He pledged the government would take "resolute" safety steps in its aftermath.

"Great importance must be attached to finding out the facts and judging the responsibility in accordance with laws and regulations," a statement published after a State Council meeting said.

Authorities must launch a "swift, open and transparent investigation" and the results must be made public, the statement said.

Saturday's high-speed train crash in Wenzhou in east China's Zhejiang Province left 192 people injured. More than 10 are in a serious condition. The D301 train rear-ended the D3115, which stalled after losing power due to a lightning strike.

The Ministry of Railways has promised to pay the families of the deceased 500,000 yuan (US$77,626) each in compensation.

The State Council has set up an investigation panel, which is still working on the site, the ministry said.

The train that was rear-ended on Saturday night usually goes after the other express train, one of several "abnormal signs" before the accident, according to state television.

It said that weather was definitely not the single factor to blame for the crash.

One of the trains involved in the crash stopped at a station much longer than usual and the other, with no scheduled stop there, stayed for more than 10 minutes that night.

The D3115, the train that stalled, entered Yongjia Station at 7:48pm and waited for nearly 30 minutes before moving on, China Central Television said, citing a work log and an unnamed guard at the station. It usually stayed for just a few minutes.

The crash happened at 8:30pm.

The D301 usually passed by the station but that night it stayed for more than 10 minutes.

The station usually relies on computerized dispatching of services, but that night they were done manually, CCTV said.

The D301 should have been be in front of the D3115 after Yongjia Station.

That night, a short blackout period in downtown Wenzhou followed the lightning, a Wenzhou railway worker told CCTV. The blackout also hit a railway work station in charge of power supplies, it said. "Computers were powered off in the blackout," the report cited a worker there as saying.

A total of 89 children were rescued when police busted two major human trafficking rings in south China, the Ministry of Public Security said on Wednesday.

Police from 14 provinces and autonomous regions worked together to bust the rings, detaining a total of 369 suspects.

On July 15, police in south China's Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region broke up a cross-border trafficking gang, saving eight children and detaining 39 suspects.

While holding a four-month-old infant in her arms, Yang Lijuan, a policewoman from the city of Handan in Hebei, said "the baby was fed with low-quality milk powder as a result of the buyer's poor living conditions." The infant was abducted two months ago.

The residue of the Xichuan Minjiang Electrolytic Manganese Plant in the county of Songpan in Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture was washed into rivers by heavy rains last Thursday and contaminated Mianyang's water source of the Fujiang River, according to a notice posted on the city government's official website, which was repeatedly broadcast through local media.

Ye Hongjian, general manager of the Mianyang Water Group, said Fujiang River is one of the city's three major water sources, which accounts for 70 percent of the drinking-water supply for some 300,000 people living the city's urban areas.

"I was at a tea house with my friends when I suddenly heard the warning Tuesday afternoon, but when I rushed to the nearest store, I saw a long queue of water buyers, and there wasn't a bottle on the shelves," said a woman surnamed Zhou.

The city's environment protection bureau on Wednesday morning reported that the content of manganese per liter sampled at the Fujiang River was 1.888 milligrams, and that of ammonia and nitrogen was 3.349 milligrams, compared with a state-allowed level of 0.1 milligram and 0.5 milligrams, respectively.
