Persecution of Indian Christians worsens
But it seems that Christians continue to be inadequately protected in the Stae of Orissa. Christians are living in a state of fear as a result of recent violent outbursts against them. It is estimated that 59 Christians have now been murdered in the latest violence, 300 churches destroyed, 6,000 houses razed to the ground, 50,000 Christians displaced and 24,000 living in emergency camps. In addition, nuns have been raped and priests attacked and killed. The violence started after the assassination of Hindu leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati in August. Maoist rebels claimed responsibility by Hindu fundamentalists continue to hold Christians responsible. Violence against Christians is beginning to spread to other parts of India and there is the urgent need for dialogue between religious and political leaders at this time. |
