Pastor Steven Turikunkiko has set up a community in Rwanda for victims of the genocide. 160 widows & teenagers & 80 younger children live with him; farming, sharing their lives and caring for those dying from AIDS. The community subsists on less than $1 per person per day. At enormous personal sacrifice, Pastor Steven and his wife have also adopted 20 orphans - who live with them and their 2 other children. SERVE in Zimbabwe
Times are tough in Zimbabwe right now. But SERVE project workers, led by Chris O'Donoghue and Catherine Glover, are seeing amazing things happen in youth ministry there... There are currently 5 full-time workers and 15 volunteers at the project, which has recently moved to new premises. The main type of youth ministry is to run a Drop-In Centre there. Young people can talk to the youth workers or go on training programs in computer technology and other life skills training. Between July and September 2008, there will be a 4 Module training program for youth workers on the shores of Lake Chivero. This is being sponsored by the Diocese of Harare. SERVE also has a training centre in Tafara which specialises in making school uniforms and shoes. These are then sold at a fair trade price. The other SERVE youth clubs are thriving too. Over 180 young people are involved in drama, soccer, music clubs and a support group for those living with HIV/AIDS.
