Introducing Pastor Steven from Rwanda:

Pastor Steven

Pastor Steven Turikunkiko has set up a community in Rwanda for victims of the genocide. 160 widows & teenagers & 80 younger children live with him; farming, sharing their lives and caring for those dying from AIDS. The community subsists on less than $1 per person per day.

At enormous personal sacrifice, Pastor Steven and his wife have also adopted 20 orphans - who live with them and their 2 other children.

Suicide rates drop for young men

Download

The suicide rate for young men aged 15 to 24 has dropped by 16.6 per 100,000 people. This follows a doubling of the numbers between 1970 and the 1990s.

Figures are at their lowest for young women since 1968 - but figures for hanging as a method of suicide amongst women has risen dramatically.

This is the result of research done at Bristol University.

Ironically, the decrease in suicides is thought to be linked to the change in the law regarding levels of car exhaust emissions that came into force in 1993. Car engines are less toxic now, so it is harder to commit suicide.

However, there is also thought to be a link between the levels of suicide amongst young people and the levels of unemployment.

Charities argue that there is still not enough being done to support depressed teenagers who may become suicidal.
