Pastor Steven Turikunkiko has set up a community in Rwanda for victims of the genocide. 160 widows & teenagers & 80 younger children live with him; farming, sharing their lives and caring for those dying from AIDS. The community subsists on less than $1 per person per day. At enormous personal sacrifice, Pastor Steven and his wife have also adopted 20 orphans - who live with them and their 2 other children. Fairtrade - Way to Go!
Bananas were the most popular product of all - raising more than £150m in sales! The sales of Fairtrade cotton was the biggest rise - a whopping 660% to nearly £35m. Clearly, many companies are seeing the value in going Fairtrade. One of the latest is Tate & Lyle, the sugar company, who are moving over to Fairtrade in 2009. They will become the largest UK firm to carry the label. The churches have played such a huge role in advertising and creating a Fairtrade culture. Are you playing your part in your youth ministry to increase sales and help out the producers? Think about it... |
